Monuments

There are several monuments relating to tragedies which occurred on Mt. Wellington.

Smith’s Monument. Dr. John Smith was lost on the Mountain and died in January 1858. See our Documents page for this and other downloadable information.

Radford’s and Richards’ Monuments. These two young men lost their lives are a result of exposure and exhaustion during a race to the Pinnacle in 1903. See our Documents page for this and other downloadable information..

Cook’s Monument. This so-called “monument” is actually not a monument at all, but a sandstone plaque commemorating the 1861 Hobart waterworks system at the Fern Tree Bower. Henry Cook was mayor at the time. See our Documents page for this and other downloadable information.
